CCleaner Portable
In a few words, CCleaner Portable is the pocket version of CCleaner, an excellent cleaning tool with which you can erase unused files, thus gaining back valuable free disk space and making Windows run faster and smoother. The great advantage about CCleaner Portable is that it allows you to do just the same without leaving any evidence of use on the computer. In fact, you don't even need to install it. Simply run it from your USB memory stick and you'll have immediate access to all of its features. CCleaner Portable does create some necessary keys in Windows Registry, but these are deleted when the program is closed, so there'll be no trace of it left on the system.
Regarding its functions, CCleaner Portable does a very satisfactory job. The program helps you to get rid of many different files such as Internet cookies, temporary files, log files or all those leftovers found after months of installing and uninstalling applications. The configuration menu in CCleaner Portable features interesting options like the possibility to keep certain cookies which may be useful for you or the ability to add custom file types to the delete filter. Apart from freeing up disk space, CCleaner Portable also lets you uninstall applications, find broken registry keys and list all the programs set to run when Windows launches.
On the down side, CCleaner Portable does not allow you to undo changes, so you must be very sure about what you want to erase before clicking on "Yes". Also, the program can take a few minutes before finishing the analysis that must be done prior to deletion. However, this is probably due to the fact that CCleaner Portable runs from a USB device and that we checked all the available options when cleaning our system – the test found 558 MB of removable material, which obviously took a while to be deleted.
All in all, CCleaner Portable is every bit as good as its "big brother" and comes in really handy when you want to use it on any PC without installing anything or leaving any traces behind you.

RealPlayer SP
Nowadays, its far more sophisticated than it was in its humble beginnings and features social and portability options that make it a widely-used application for those who want to share films and take the player on the move with them.
Installation of RealPlayer SP is a little annoying though. When you install it you are offered a range of options, such as to add a desktop shortcut to RealPlayer's game site, download Google Chrome, plus you have to close and restart your browser (you'll require the latest version of Internet Explorer). The installation process also takes a couple of minutes after this to fully install. Finally, when it starts, you're offered a chance to upgrade to paid versions of RealPlayer SP before you have to register yourself with Real Networks.
When you're up and running, RealPlayer SP features a wide interface where you will notice some ads and videos recommended by Real Networks. While this looks a bit cluttered and messy, the real benefits of RealPlayer SP come in using it as a portable player and converter. RealPlayer SP is ideal for playing and sharing video with your friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter and it works easily with BlackBerry, iPod, iPhone and other game systems. The new video converter allows you to copy online video to your iPod, Xbox, PS3 and other devices. Unfortunately, you can't rip DVDs with RealPlayer SP, although this is available as a feature if you upgrade to RealPlayer Plus.
One of the most annoying aspects of RealPlayer SP however is that it takes ages to start whether streaming a clip or just opening a standalone video file. This may be due to the many extensions and plugins that come preinstalled with it. There are also too many clicks and mouse movements required just to switch to a full-screen playback mode when viewing a clip on a web page. Also, it appears that you are able to watch a selection of channels for free in the 'SuperPass' menu, such as BBC World and Al Jazeera. However, when one of the channels finally opens, you are informed that you only get five-minute free-views unless you purchase a SuperPass.
That said, RealPlayer SP isn't bad at all. It's comparable to Windows Media Player 12 as they both have some impressive ways of organizing your music. For me, the best feature is the CD burner which is something I've used from the early days of RealPlayer SP. The sheer quality of some of the media only available in Real formats makes RealPlayer SP an essential item in the toolkit of any fan of Internet video and audio.
Most recently, RealPlayer has been updated with far better mobile and social networking integration. You can now copy your favorite videos to an iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and dozens of other popular devices automatically. In addition, you can import photos taken on an Android, BlackBerry, or digital camera to a PC with one click, then easily share favorite photos on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
RealPlayer SP is a media player that has suffered from serious feature-creep over the years. However, it's still a must-have on any PC that's connected to the Internet.

Firefox 5
The most outstanding improvement in Firefox 5 is speed. The new Firefox is noticeably faster when loading web pages and, according to Mozilla, also lighter on RAM memory. In terms of design and appearance, however, Firefox 5 doesn’t change that much from the previous version. The interface is pretty much the same as Firefox 4, with a minimalist toolbar and a big orange button on the top left corner to access the program’s menus.
Besides those visible changes, Firefox 5 also includes a few interesting enhancements under the hood: the web browser engine supports CSS animations and has also improved support for HTML 5, XHR, MathML and others. The JavaScript, memory and networking performance have also been optimized, and spell checking has been improved for some languages.
Other remarkable new features in Firefox 5 are the new option in the Privacy menu to opt out of tracking by advertising networks and other websites, and the Firefox Sync utility to backup and synchronize browser data across all your computers.

Skype
With Skype you can not only have voice chats on your computer – just like telephone, only for free – but also make real phone calls at much lower rates, using the so called SkypeOut service and paying with Skype credit. Besides voice chats, Skype also includes the standard IM functionalities (written conversations, emoticons, user avatars and so on) and also lets you have group video conferences.
These video calls are precisely the main focus on Skype's latest version. The program's interface has been completely redesigned with video conferences on mind. This means it's been made wider so that video fits in perfectly with your written chat, your contact list and a toolbar to manage conversation. The new interface is transformed when you make a call, getting rid of all the clutter, so you just see the video images, and controls. Group video is still being tested in this version, and it's pretty cool.
The sound quality during our testing was perfect: loud and clear. Video sometimes appeared a bit pixelated, but nothing we couldn't really deal with. There was also one nice detail, and that's the ability to see your own video image built-in on your contact's video, and the option to take a snapshot of your own image.
The other major development is Facebook integration. This is a pretty big thing, as not only does it give you your news feed in the app - anyone can do that - but adds call and sms buttons to any of your friends who share their contact numbers. If you’ve paid for Skype minutes, you can call your Facebook friends, and if they’re also signed in to Skype you can call them for free. One of the best new features is the automatic call recovery - drop a call and it’s put in pause. Restarting it is now really easy.
Skype 5 features a complete interface overhaul that now focuses more on video chats, and also adds some handy improvements to the way you communicate online.

Despite being a free security tool, AVG Anti-Virus is as good as any paid app. It features a bunch of dedicated modules to protect you from antivirus, spyware, rootkits and spam, and also includes the so called LinkScanner – an extra layer of protection that checks search results and web links to make sure they’re safe.

Format Factory 2.70
Format Factory is very easy to use, although it does have rather an unintuitive interface. The file browser doesn't appear until you select the target format, which is a bit weird but as long as you know this first it's no problem. You can select individual files to convert, or complete folders, and also tweak some basic conversion settings.
Format Factory isn't particularly original but what makes it really useful is that it handles images as well as audio and video. Most converters like this only handle audio and video, and adding images to the mix gives it an edge, especially considering it's free. I also like the Audio Joiner in Format Factory, which allows you to take two separate clips, join them together and then convert them. It would have been nice to have had preset profiles for mobile conversions but you can't have it all in a free app sometimes.
Format Factory is an excellent conversion tool for anyone that converts between video, audio and images on a regular basis.

It works by removing passwords that restrict access in two areas. One is for passwords that restrict some functions such as printing copying and pasting. The second is any password that might prevent you from accessing or opening a PDF file.
To remove the first type of restrictions, just drag your PDF file onto a link on your desktop or alternatively onto the Free PDF Unlocker icon on your desktop. Instantly, Free PDF Unlocker should remove the password and allow printing or copying & pasting the contents from the PDF File.
To unlock the second kind of restriction with Free PDF Unlocker, you have to right click and select "Remove PDF Password" and close the application. The former function seems to work most of the time but the latter would not remove the password in my case. If you are having problems, you can leave a comment on the developer's blog.

To get started, simply open your music library, and drag and drop files into Virtual DJ's decks. There's a BPM counter to help you judge transitions between tracks, and the visual wave display also helps to cue up your music. Setting sound levels and altering the bass and treble are all really easy. If you don't want to worry about your transitions, press the auto mix button and let Virtual DJ do all the work for you. Be warned though, that the results are pretty mixed!
You can sample and loop tracks live, add effects, and there's a very natural-feeling scratch mode. For the adventurous, there's a lot you can add to your mixes with Virtual DJ.
Support for recording your mixes is also available, which is a great way to learn, allowing you to analyze your mistakes and successes with the application. It also means you can record mixes for your friends! Mixes can be recorded in MP3, burned to CD or even streamed to internet radio. Virtual DJ can be set up to use two sound cards, if you have them.
Virtual DJ is accessible to beginners and packed with extra features. The downside of the software is that it sticks too much to what a physical DJ setup is - other programs offer four decks and more user-friendly interfaces - small knobs may be great for your fingers, but they're less use on a screen!
On the whole, Virtual DJ is a solid, traditional-looking application. You can showcase your very own mix without having to carry around expensive and bulky equipment.
