Cheat Engine, simply known as CE, is a free & open source memory scanner/debugger/HEX editor that was built with the goal to help you changing games as you wish, like adding health points, enabling God mode, and so on... procedure usually known as cheating (Cheat Engine can create standalone game trainers that will work on computers that don't have it installed), but you can also use this program to debug "normal" Windows applications, not only games. The Memory Scanner tool allows you to scan for variables that are being used in a game's executable and then change them, but Cheat Engine also comes with a bunch of additional tools very useful to those who want to get their hands dirty with binary code, such as disassembler, assembler, debugger, speedhack, the trainer maker we mentioned above, system inspection tools, Direct 3D manipulation tools, and it doesn't stop here!
If you're new to this program, then you should check the tutorial coming with it, since you should reach at least step 5 for basic understanding of Cheat Engine before actually starting to use it... unless you enjoy discovering things the hard way, of course.
Cheat Engine is available in two major versions - Delphi and Lazarus. The first one was primarily designed for 32-bit Windows XP, while the other has been tuned to work with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and, according to some reports, Cheat Engine Lazarus also works well with Windows 7.
Since Cheat Engine is able to inject code into processes running on your system, some antivirus software can start false alarms because of that, so don't worry about that if it happens. Just enjoy this powerful tool, and that's all! .
